Also known as Pissardii Nigra, the black cherry plum is a medium-sized, decidiuous, ornamental tree with a round spreading head and purplish-black branches and twigs. Pale pink single flowers open from deep pink buds on the bare branches in March and occasionally, bears small deep red cherry plums that are edible, but best left to the birds. The emerging leaves are red, turning brownish-purple in summer and red and orange in autumn.

Black Cherry Plum or Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ Tree is ative to south-eastern Europe (i.e. Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Yugoslavia), western Asia (i.e. Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, southern Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan), western China and Pakistan.
